dated October 28, 1956: Situation in Hungary

The US is discussing with Britain, France and other countries the "feasibility and advisability" of bringing the situation in riot-torn Hungary to the UN, the State Department spokesman, Mr. Lincoln White, said in Washington on October 26. He had been asked to comment on a Paris report that Britain, France and the US were discussing the question of asking the UN Security Council to review the part played by the Soviet Union in the Hungarian rioting. Among the questions being considered was whether the presence of Soviet troops in Hungary was legitimate under the Warsaw Pact.
