SINGAPORE: In a gesture of sustaining a pro-United States policy, the Japanese Diet (Parliament) on Friday endorsed a one-year extension of a special anti-terror law. The measures will enable Japan's Maritime Self-Defence Force to continue refuelling the warships and naval helicopters belonging to the U.S. and its allies in regard to their ongoing anti-terror operations in Afghanistan. The refuelling, which began under this special enactment within weeks of the terrorist blitzkrieg on U.S. soil in 2001, takes place in the Indian Ocean area. Despite the latest extension effective from November 1, the first after Shinzo Abe took over, as Prime Minister, Japan is understood to be keen to terminate these refuelling operations within a year's time.
