MAHABUBNAGAR: Some 38 inmates of SC hostel for boys at Srirangapur in Pebbair mandal were hospitalised with complaints of stomach pain and vomiting on Friday. It is said that the water tank in the hostel was not cleaned and the drinking water not chlorinated. - Correspondent

Water meters destroyed

KHAMMAM: Farmers late on Wednesday destroyed water meters installed on the Nukalampadu major of the Nagarjunasagar left canal system protesting against the inadequate supply of water to standing crops. The loss is said to be over Rs. 2 lakhs. Farmers have been making a hue and cry over the poor supply of water for over a fortnight. - Staff Reporter

Leopard kills bullocks

ANANTAPUR: A leopard which strayed into Pedda Kondapuram of Ramagiri mandal in the wee hours of Thursday from nearby hillocks attacked and killed two bullocks belonging to a farmer B. Akkulappa. He raised an alarm when it attacked him too. Villagers chased it away into the wild. - Staff Reporter

Farmer ends life

ANANTAPUR: Pressure from lenders to repay the loans taken from them and his inability to pay led to the suicide of a farmer Ramakrishna, 25, near Kuntimaddi in Ramagiri mandal on Thursday. He had seven acres of dry land and suffered crop loss. He had piled up a debt of Rs. 70,000. - Staff Reporter

BJP's plea to State

HYDERABAD: The BJP on Friday asked the State to set up a State-owned petroleum corporation, on the lines of one in Gujarat, to explore and exploit vast reserves of oil and natural gas in the Krishna-Godavari basin. At a press meet here, its leaders — S.V. Seshagiri Rao and K. Laxman — said establishing a petroleum corporation would strengthen the State's economy. - Special Correspondent

Written test for police selections

Kakinada: Written test will be conducted for police stipendiary constables selections at the JNTU College of Engineering here on October 29, according to SP Battini Srinivasulu. He said all the 1,285 candidates appearing for the test should reach the examination centre one and a half hours before along with physical test qualifying certificates for verification. - Correspondent

RMO quarters inaugurated

Kakinada: Collector M. Subrahmanyam inaugurated the Resident Medical Officer's quarters constructed at a cost of Rs.8 lakhs on the Government General Hospital premises on Friday. The Collector asked the RMO and others doctors to make their services available to patients making best use of the facilities provided by the Government. M. Jana Jagruti rally flagged off

Kakinada: East Godavari Collector M Subrahmanyam flagged off the Jana Jagruti Rally as a part of the `Operation Dengue programme' aimed at creating awareness among people in the 16th division in the city on Friday. He said intensive measures such as fixing of nets to exhausts of septic tank pipes, fogging and desilting of drains were in full swing all over the district. Farmer dies of snakebite

ANANTAPUR: H. Jampanna (27), a farmer of Seshampalli village in Ramagiri mandal, died of snakebite late on Wednesday night, as he went to guard his groundnut field from wild boars, which damage the crop. He died on way to the hospital at Ramagiri. - Staff Reporter

Eco park to come up near YSR Estates

KADAPA: An ecological park is to be built on 170 hectares near YSR Estates at Idupulapaya in Vempalle mandal at a cost of Rs. 15.96 crores, on the lines of Nehru park at Hyderabad.

Andhra Pradesh Forest Development Corporation chief general manager Sammi Reddy, its directors Madhusudan and Prabhakar, DFO Gandhi Reddy and forest ranger Basha inspected lands suitable for the park. - Staff Reporter

Pirated CDs seized, shop owners booked

KADAPA: Badvel police and Film Chamber of Commerce coordinators raided three CD shops in Badvel town and seized 70 pirated CDs of new films such as `Stalin', `Boss' and `Bommarillu' on Thursday night. Cases were registered against the shop owners. - Staff Reporter

Job scheme: officials warned against errors

Madanaplle: District Water Agency Project Director Murali has warned officials against errors in the implementation of the employment guarantee scheme.

Addressing a meeting on Thursday, he said 4.97 lakh job cards were distributed to labourers in Chittoor district.

He directed the programme officers to create awareness about the scheme among the labourers. - Correspondent

Steps taken to check mosquito breeding

Madanaplle: Some 2 lakh gambusia fish were released into the stagnated waters at several colonies by the municipal authorities to reduce the mosquito menace. Commissioner B. Nagabhushanam said that the fish would eat the eggs and larvae so as to keep a check on mosquito breeding. - Correspondent

Maoists observe bandh

KHAMMAM: The RTC suspended its operations to the tribal pockets, including Gundala mandal, on Friday in view of the Maoist-sponsored bandh against the Vankatapuram incident (in Warangal district) that left four Maoists killed last week. The CPI(Maoist) called for the bandh in Khammam, Warangal and Karimnagar. The protest evoked poor response in Khammam district.

Life was as usual in all towns and villages except Gundala and Pinapaka mandals. - Staff Reporter

Rally against dengue

KHAMMAM : A massive rally was organised in Bhadrachalam town as part of the campaign against dengue and viral fevers on Friday.

Over 5,000, persons, including students from different schools and colleges volunteers of the non-governmental organisations and the AVOPA took part in the rally.

ITDA Project Officer Jyothi Budha Prakash and Bhadrachalam Sub-Collector Yogita Rana flagged off the rally.- Staff Reporter

Photography workshop

KHAMMAM: A state-level photography workshop on rural and tribal tourism was organised by the Khammam Photo Arts Organisation in Bhadrachalam on Friday.

Bhadrachalam Sub-Collector Yogita Rana inaugurated the workshop. She said the locales of the tribal pocket hold huge potential for nature-based tourism.

Banks of the river Godavari, the tribal habitations all along and the lifestyle of people, were in fact the dream of a professional photographer. She wished all success for the organisers of the workshop.
