CPI releases second list of candidates

CHENNAI: The Communist Party of India's (CPI) State Secretary D. Pandian on Friday announced the second list of party candidates for the post of chairpersons of five local bodies.

He said S. Vijaya would be the party's chairperson candidate of the third grade municipality at Velampalayam in Coimbatore district. A.K. Devaraj, Shakuntala and S. Prema, are the chairperson nominees of the town panchayats at Kelamangalam in Krishnagiri district, Thalaignayiru in Nagapattinam district and Nangavaram in Karur district. Droupadai Chellan would contest for the post of Pennagaram Panchayat Union chairperson as the party nominee. — Special Correspondent

Pension hike for kin of firing victims

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Friday announced an increase in pension for the families of those who died in firing during the Vanniyar Sangam agitation in 1987. The family pension will be increased from Rs. 1,500 to Rs. 2,000 from November, says a release. — Special Correspondent

Banned substance seized

CHENNAI: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence has seized 30 kg of "white powdered substance suspected to be ketamine hydrochloride," a substance banned in many countries, from a container at a container freight station here on Thursday. The consignment, booked in the name of a Chennai-based company and meant for Taiwan, had been declared as coconut shell charcoal. — Special Correspondent

Lithotripsy machines for two hospitals

CHENNAI: Government General Hospital, Chennai and Government Rajaji Hospital will get a Lithotripsy machine each. A press note said Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had sanctioned Rs. 3 crores for the installation of these machines in the two hospitals. — Special Correspondent

PWD Secretary visits Periyar dam

THENI: Public Works Department Secretary S. Rajarathinam along with Collector Rajesh Lakhoni visited Periyar dam and assessed the condition on Friday. PWD officials said Mr. Rajarathinam held discussions with senior PWD officials after inspection. Senior PWD officials accompanied him. — Staff Reporter

Infantry Day observed

CHENNAI: Officers Training Academy Commandant Maj. Gen. R.K. Swamy led officers and other ranks in paying homage to those who died fighting in wars at the War Memorial here. Braving heavy rain, Army officers and soldiers stationed in Chennai and retired officers laid wreaths in memory of the martyrs on the occasion of Infantry Day. It was on that day 59 years ago — at 5 a.m. on October 27, 1947 — that the Battalion headquarters and a company of an Infantry Battalion landed in Srinagar to defend Kashmir from the advancing Pakistani raiders. The Infantry Day commemorates this first battle since the country gained independence.

The General Officer Commanding, Andhra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala Area, maj. Gen. B. Sivasankar, organised a barakhana for personnel stationed in the Area. — Special Correspondent

Heavy rain in Erode

ERODE: Heavy rain lashed Erode and its surrounding areas on Thursday night. Erode recorded 27 mm of rainfall, Bhavani 11.4 mm and Moolanure 7 mm. Perundurai, Kanjikoil, Chitode and its surroundings experienced moderate rainfall.

Man kills son

ERODE: In a domestic quarrel, a man killed his son on Thursday. According to the police, Balasubramaniam (30) of Parapalayam, Uthukuli, suspected that his wife Sumathy was having an affair with his father Muthuswamy Naicker. There used to be frequent quarrels between them.

It is alleged that in one such quarrel on Thursday night, Balasubramaniam attempted to attack his wife with a vegetable cutter. When his son Gowtham (12) tried to prevent him, Balasubramaniam attacked him. He died on the spot. Muthuswamy Naicker and Sumathy sustained injuries and were admitted to hospital. Balasubramaniam surrendered before the Perunduri police.

Mayor election

SALEM: Arrangements for the conduct of elections to the Salem Mayor post at 9.30 a.m. in the Corporation council hall on October 28 have been completed, Corporation Commissioner A.M. Selvam has said.

He told reporters on Friday that this time the mayor post had been reserved for Scheduled Castes woman. Nominations for the post would be received in the council hall and scrutinised immediately. After the election, the results would be declared.

The elected candidate would assume office the same day, he said.

The election of Deputy Mayor would be held in the afternoon, the Commissioner added.

Youth rally

SALEM: The Project Concern International (PCI), Salem, organised a youth rally and convention as part of the Right Ranga campaign for creating awareness on HIV/AIDS.

According to a release, the youth convention was organised with the aim to make the youth, who were considered the potential change agents and driving force, to actively participate in the awareness campaign on HIV/AIDS. School and college students, women, volunteers of the Nehru Yuva Kendra and Red Ribbon Clubs participated in the rally. Director of PCI, South India, Kavita Chandok delivered the keynote address. The Dean, Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital, P. Anusuya, delivered the inaugural address.

MLAs and representatives of various non-governmental organisations participated. Project Manager, Salem PCI, Raji, welcomed the gathering. - Staff Reporter

Detained

SALEM: The Salem City Police detained two persons under the Goondas Act here recently.

The police said Ranganathan (37) and Babu (30), who were reportedly involved in a number of criminal incidents, were detained under the Goondas Act on instructions from the City Police Commissioner, K. Gopalakrishnan.

Admission to Yajur Veda session

Tiruchi: Admission to the Yajur Veda session under the Gurukula system is currently on at the Sri Sri Bharathi Theertha Mahaswamigal Yajur Vedapatasala at Sringeri Sankar Mutt in Srirangam. Boys for whom Upanayanam has been done and who are in the age group of 7-11 years alone would be eligible for admission in the patasala.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level at the Mettur dam stood at 94.91 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Friday. The inflow was 6,853 cusecs and the discharge 100 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Talent search examination

Tuticorin: A district-level talent search examination, jointly organised by State Bank of India and Sakthi Vinayagar Hindu Vidhyalaya, will be held on the school premises on October 29.

A release said the examination would be held in two categories. Category A, meant for students of Class VI to IX, will be held for an hour starting 11 a.m. Category B, for students studying in Classes X to XII, will commence at 12.15 p.m, it was stated in a release.

Demonstration

TIRUNELVELI: Workers of IMFL retail outlets run by the TASMAC staged a demonstration at Palayamkottai on Friday.

In the protest held opposite Office of Deputy Director, Labour Welfare, they said their services should be confirmed and bonus should be given as the government was getting a whopping revenue through sale of IMFL liquor.
