Udhagamandalam: Non-teaching staff of the Government Arts College here abstained from work and along with representatives of the Tamil Nadu Government Employees Association (TNGEA) staged a demonstration on the college campus on Friday. The demonstration was in protest against the harsh manner in which the College Principal R.Sreeramalu had allegedly spoken to an office assistant V. Vijayalakshmi.
Complaint
In her complaint to the Special Secretary, Department of Higher Education, she has claimed that while discussing over phone matters related to question papers sent by the Bharathiar University, the Principal who was at Chennai had raised his voice and scolded her. Stating that she had been hurt by the outburst, she wanted appropriate action to be taken in the matter and permission given to seek the intervention of the human rights organization. Mr. Sreeramalu when contacted said that till now Ms. Vijayalakshmi had been dealing with certain university related matters by herself. In keeping with a recent decision taken to divide the responsibilities and accompanying remuneration among the non-teaching staff she had been asked to share the workload. However, while issuing instructions in this regard over phone, she had given irrelevant replies and spoken in a manner which was tantamount to insubordination. The matter has been taken up with the higher authorities. Contending that while dealing with women employees the superior officers should be polite, the TNGEA representatives hoped that the principal would initiate steps to restore cordial relations. Meanwhile, the teaching staff said that the face off between the principal and the clerk had not affected the functioning of the college in any way.
