Madurai: A. Kathirvelu of Coimbatore dethroned Thanjavur's A. Balasubramanian 5-25, 25-23, 25-14 to bag the men's title while Chennai's N. Mythili retained the women's crown with a 25-4, 25-4 win over citymate N. Padmini in the 27th LIC South Zone carrom tournament here on Friday. In the men's semifinals, Balasubramanian beat S. Sundaraj of Madurai 25-16, 25-6 and Kathirvelu eased past S. Shanmugaraj of Chennai 25-0, 25-5. In the women's last four clashes, Mythili defeated R. Malathi of Coimbatore 25-6, 25-8 and Padmini struggled past S. Lalitha of Chennai 22-18, 16-19, 19-12.
At Dindigul, Kanyakumari entered the quarterfinals of the 29th Tamil Nadu State junior inter-district football championship for the T.P. Ramasamy Pillai Cup, organised by Solar Sports Club, with a convincing 3-0 win over Krishnagiri at the Govt. HSS ground, Nilakottai, on Friday. Vikraman (fifth and 45th) and Antony Xavier (89th) were the scorers. In another match, Tuticorin prevailed over Sivagangai 4-1, via tie-breaker, to make the last eight. After regulation time, the teams were locked goalless. In the tie-breaker, Recope, Infant, Lawrence and Alen scored for Tuticorin while Periannan scored for Sivagangai.
