KANDY: Local lad Hasith Jayawardena played a wonderful first round to score 41 Nett stableford points in the 11th Sri Lankan Golf Classic at Victoria Golf and Country Resort here on Friday. The reigning leader Sam Gunaratne, in his quota of two rounds has scored 75 points. If Jayawardena maintains his form, there is every chance that he becomes the highest scorer and win the tournament. On Friday, Jayawardena, with a handicap of 21, started with a bogey and ended with another; his best performance coming in the par-3 7th hole when he putted a birdie, and he also had a shot to the nearest to the pin. Another youngster from England R. Northcott (H/C 22) carded 37. In the ladies' section, of the second set that played its first round, L.J. Too of Malaysia emerged the leader with 37 points. In her quota of two rounds, Indira Tibblin of Sri Lanka is at the top with 68 points. It'll be interesting to see how Too and N. Sarkari of UAE (35) fare in their second round. There was a heavy downpour in the afternoon, but it stopped after half-an-hour enabling play to resume. Saturday is the final day. The results (Round 1, second set): Men (Nett): 1. H. Jayawardena (SL) 41, 2. R. Northcott (UK) 37, 3. C. Wickramasinghe (SL) 36, 4. B. Gray (UK) 36, 5. M. Crandell (UAE) 35. Women (Nett): 1. L.J. Too (MAS) 37, 2. N. Sarkari (UAE) 35, M. Jayakoddy (SL) 35, 4. R. Sangani (SL) 33, S. Selvaratnam (SL) 33, 5. Varee Somerporn (SL) 31.
