Coordination panel meeting held

Bangalore: The coordination committee of the Janata Dal (Secular) and the Bharatiya Janata Party met here on Friday under the leadership of Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa owing to the preoccupation of Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy.

Although discussions were held on several important matters, a final decision will be taken after the approval of the Chief Minister. It was, however, made clear that the list of the Rajyotsava Award-winners would be modified to include some persons recommended by the BJP. — Special Correspondent

Objections invited to helmet rule

BANGALORE: The Government on Friday issued a notification calling for objections from the public to the new rule exempting those riding pillion from wearing helmets in Bangalore and in the limits of five other city corporations in the State.

Objections and suggestions can be filed within seven days at the office of the Principal Secretary, Home Department, Second Floor, Vidhana Soudha, Bangalore 560 001, the notification states.

The Government has decided to make it mandatory for two-wheeler riders to wear helmets from next month as ordered by the Karnataka High Court.

Warning to civil servants on strikes

BANGALORE: The Government, in a circular issued on Thursday, has warned that State civil servants will face a jail term of six months or more or a fine of Rs. 500 or both if they participate in any strike in violation of the State Civil Service Rules, 1966.

Persons who provoke or induce a government employee to participate in a strike are liable to a jail term of one year or more and a penalty of Rs. 1,000. The police have powers to arrest, without a warrant, any government employee who participates in a strike, the circular added. — Staff Reporter

`Protect interests of areca growers'

Bangalore: A meeting of representatives of areca growers' organisations and Ministers and MLAs from areca growing regions, under the chairmanship of the BJP MLA Araga Jnanendra, has urged the Centre to ban only harmful ingredients that go into gutka instead of imposing a blanket ban.

In a press release, Mr. Jnanedra said the Government should keep in mind the interests of areca growers while taking a decision.

The Government should invest in research on alternative uses of arecanut, he added.

Demands placed before pay panel

BANGALORE: The Karnataka State Government Employees' Association has submitted a memorandum to the 5th Pay Commission seeking an interim recommendation for the merger of 50 per cent of dearness allowance with the basic pay of employees or, in the alternative, to sanction 22 per cent of basic pay as `second' interim relief.

According to a press release issued by association president L. Byrappa, the Pay Commission has been urged to consider 52 demands, including fixation of pay on promotion and house rent, city compensatory, transportation and medical allowances.

DAVANGERE: Sri Chaitanya Group of Institutions, in association with the Rotary Club (South), will organise a seminar on "Course and Career Planning" for students from Standard XI to II Pre-University, on October 30 at Bapuji Auditorium in Davangere. `Cancel permission'

HASSAN: The Vidyanagara Extension Development Association (VEDA) here on Thursday urged the Hassan Urban Development Authority (HUDA) to cancel permission granted to original landowners, to convert the land earmarked for public amenities in the extension into residential sites. Convener of VEDA, Susheele Gowda, cautioned that the association would take legal recourse if HUDA did not withdraw the permission. — Staff Correspondent

Killed in accident

HASSAN: Two persons were killed when the vehicle by which they were travelling, collided with a lorry near Angadihalli in Belur police station limits on Wednesday night. Police said Dushyanth and his friend Raghu died on the spot. — Staff Correspondent

Three arrested

BANGALORE: The Central Crime Branch (CCB) police have arrested three persons on charges of selling famous English titles violating the Copyright Act and recovered books, wrappers and machinery worth Rs. 1 crore. The titles included books in the Harry Potter series, "The Inheritance of Loss" and "The Da Vinci Code." The police gave the names of the accused as P.P. Hanif (28), resident of Shivajinagar, Srinivasa, proprietor, Sri Sai Printers, Kalyana Nagar, Babu, proprietor, Coronation Art Printers, Banaswadi, and Anwar, proprietor, Reefa Binders, Thanisandra Main Road. — Staff Reporter

Elephants destroy crop in Sirsi

Sirsi: A herd of 24 wild elephants in Choudalli area in Mundgod taluk have destroyed paddy crop. The elephants were spotted in Baddigeri forest area. The pachyderms have destroyed crops on four acres belonging to Fakirappa Bendlagatti, one acre of Basavantappa Shilli, one acre of Malleshappa Madli, one acre of Rajappa Hadimani. The estimated loss is more than Rs. 1 lakh. The paddy growers have requested the forest officials to scare away the elephants.

Stipend

DHARWAD: Applications have been invited from law graduates who have registered their names in the State Bar Council on and after April 1, 2006 for stipend of Rs, 1,000 for twelve months. The graduates are requested to submit their applications along with a certificate from the president of the local bar association to the tahsildar at the taluk level and to the Deputy Commissioner at the district level. The application forms are available at the office of the Deputy Commissioner. The last date for submitting the applications is November 11, the Deputy Commissioner has said in a release. — Staff Correspondent
