TIRUCHI : On the very first year of initiation, the momentum of University Students Service Corps (USSC), conceptualised on the lines of NSS and NCC by the Bharathidasan University, has gathered pace in affiliated colleges. The USSC, involving practical components of personality development and environmental extension activities, now had an enrolment of 1,200 students with 40 units, said the Vice-Chancellor, C. Thangamuthu. As part of personality development initiative, the university has entered into a tie-up with the Aliyar-based Vedatri Maharishi Ashram, to impart yoga training to the USSC members at its various yoga meditation centres in the central districts. Staff coordinators of the NSSC units underwent training in yoga at the ashram, recently. The coordinators will pass on the benefits of the training programme to the USSC volunteers, who, in turn, are expected to care for the mental health of the rural populace by spreading awareness of yoga in villages where they undertake environmental activities. Though a voluntary service, USSC is a self-supporting programme. Each of the students enrolled with USSC contributes Rs.100 per annum. The rationale behind collecting money is to make them realise their responsibility as active stakeholders of the societal initiative. The respective institutions and the university have separately contributed equal sums per student for arriving at a comfortable corpus for meaningful extension activities.
