Demand for rights of Dalit Christians

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Poor Christian Liberation Movement (PCLM) has demanded equal rights and participation for Dalit Christians in the Church structure to allow concerted development of the Christian community.

Alleging that the Church leadership is ignoring just demands of Dalit Christians listed in the New Delhi Charter, Dalit leaders have strongly criticised the indifference on the part of the Church leadership.

Speaking at a meeting, PCLM president R.L. Francis said: "If the Church leadership is serious about the development of Dalit Christians, the downtrodden section of the Christian congregation, they should come out clearly on the issue of implementing the demands of Dalit Christians as contained in the New Dalit Declaration. There is no alternative before them, and the sooner they do it, it would be in the best interest of the Christian community as a whole."
