Strike paralyses banks in Dakshina Kannada district

Employees of nearly 200 branches stage demonstration


  • Employees can choose pension or continue under provident fund
  • Banking industry is not allowed the second option



    PLACING DEMANDS: Employees of various banks stageing a demonstration in front of the head office of Corporation Bank in Mangalore on Friday.

    MANGALORE: Banking activities in Dakshina Kannada were paralysed on Friday as employees of public sector and some private sector banks in approximately 360 branches in the district owing to a one-day strike called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) to fulfil their demands.

    Employees of nearly 200 branches of various public sector and private sector banks in the city gathered in front of the headquarters of the Corporation Bank here and staged a demonstration to urge the Government to fulfil their demands.

    Addressing the employees on the occasion T.R. Bhat, joint general secretary, All India Bank Officers' Confederation (AIBOC), also president of Corporation Bank Officers' Organisation, said the UFBU has been demanding an additional option for the employees and officers for exercising their choice in favour of pension.

    The banking industry was not given the second option.

    Protest meeting

    The members of United Forum of Bank Unions staged a protest meeting in front of the Catholic Centre branch of Syndicate Bank here on Friday demanding the fulfilment of their demands.

    Banks in the district remained closed owing to a strike called by the forum.
