Man beaten to death

VIJAYAWADA: A 50-year-old man was beaten to death, reportedly over domestic problems, near Jyothi Mahal in broad daylight on Friday and the Krishnalanka police suspected that his son-in-law could have been accused in the case.

The police said that two persons came on service road parallel to National Highway No. 5 on a motorcycle from the skew bridge side and stopped their vehicle near a snacks shop around 2.30 p.m. They picked up an argument with Thota Krishna, a daily labourer in the shop. Even as people, who gathered there, tried to pacify them, one of the duo attacked Krishna with a hammer. Krishna sustained severe head injury and died on the spot. The duo, who fled on the motorcycle, took away the blood-soaked hammer with them. The police said eyewitnesses identified the main accused as Avanigadda Jaya Shankar, son-in-law of Krishna.

Jaya Shankar, on whom the Patamata police had opened a history sheet, married Krishna's only daughter Purnamma five years ago, against the wishes of her father. Though Purnamma tried to bridge the gap between her father and her husband, she failed to do so. Jaya Shankar went to Krishna's house on Thursday and picked up a quarrel with him over a petty issue, the police said.
