Traders gearing up for a 3-day "Delhi bandh" from Monday

NEW DELHI: Even as traders across the Capital are gearing up for a three-day "Delhi bandh" from Monday, the Bharatiya Janata Party has announced that it will stage a 48-hour dharna at the Municipal Corporation of Delhi headquarters at Town Hall from Saturday in protest against the sealing drive that is to resume from November 1.

Led by former Union Minister and senior BJP leader Vijay Goel, a large number of traders will assemble at Town Hall under the banner of Delhi Vyapari Andolan and protest against the Congress Government's failure to save shops and businesses of traders.

Stating that several trade organisations had extended support to the dharna, Mr. Goel said the BJP would press for immediate implementation of Master Plan for Delhi-2021 as it was the only way left to provide relief to traders from sealing and demolition drives.

The Communist Party of India has also asked the Centre to ensure that sealing and demolitions are stopped till the new Master Plan is implemented. Stating that CPI workers would also protest against the sealing drive, a party release said the Government must ensure that livelihoods of lakhs of residents were not put at stake.

Meanwhile, the Confederation of All-India Traders (CAIT) continued with its citywide protests against the sealing drive and demanded Constitutional amendment to legalise shops in residential areas.

Its activists also blocked the busy Ring Road near the South Extension market in the afternoon to press their demand.

A group of traders also met Union Home Secretary V.K. Duggal and asked for an immediat

e solution to the vexed issue. They urged that the Centre should approach the Supreme Court-appointed Monitoring Committee to extend the relief to all traders till January 31, 2007. They also sought immediate implementation of the Master Plan for Delhi-2021.
