Animation on an upward curve

Entertainment industry has undergone tremendous changes. Animation has entered the scene in a big way. The techniques of animation have found extensive use in cartoon films, video games and advertising. Films like `Lord of the Rings' and `Nadodikattu' are among a variety of films that have employed animation to improve the entertainment value.

The low cost of production of animation films in India has been an attractive factor for many western film production companies to outsource the animation work in the country. Walt Disney has already started the outsourcing work in India.

Kerala has a pool of talents in animation and sophisticated training will help them to improve their performance, observes Philip Thomas, a top executive of a company focussed on training in animation and visual effects. This is the right time to have more trained persons in 3D animation and game design because of the increasing opportunities in the field, he says.

Globally, the entertainment and media industry is the third largest, next only to health and food industry. The India entertainment and media industry has outperformed the Indian economy and is one of the fastest growing sectors in terms of revenue generation and employment opportunities, according to V. Natarajan, an expert in animation techniques. The advantage of Indian students is that they have high-level of creative talent and enthusiasm to master the technology, says Mr. Thomas. India, with its huge population, can soon become the largest supplier of professionals in the field where acute shortage of quality professionals is being faced. More awareness is required to spread the message on the opportunities in the field, according to him.
