Kerala
The outbreak of chikungunya seems to have encouraged innovators to propose unique methods to check the increasing mosquito menace in Kerala. B. Ramesh, a senior Professor of the Department of Commerce at Kalady Sree Sankara College, has developed a low-cost multi-purpose fumigator to ward off the growing mosquito population. A person involved in the promotion of such innovative ideas, Dr. Ramesh is also the secretary of the Centre for Dissemination of Appropriate Rural Technologies (C-DART) based at Kalady. "The innovative device, having wheels on either sides to move from one place to other, can easily be operated with hands for repelling mosquitoes through fumigation. It would be of immense help especially in public places and premises of the households. Coconut husks, neem leaves and other similar items can be used inside the chamber of the device for the purpose of fumigation," says Dr. Ramesh. The device, having a height of about 2.5 ft, can also be operated with electric power. A long flexible hose attached atop the device helps in emitting thick fumes even to a considerable distance. Dr. Ramesh says the equipment is useful for repelling insects and pests in an eco-friendly manner.
