Elections postponed in Muthupettai panchayat union

Thanjavur: DMK and its allies swept the elections to chairpersons and deputy chairpersons of three municipalities, 14 panchayat unions and 22 town panchayats which were held on Saturday.

Municipalities:

Thanjavur: Thenmozhi Jayabalan (DMK) was elected as the chairperson. She got 33 votes out of 51.

She is the first woman chairperson of the municipality.

Union Minister of State for Finance S. S. Palani Manickam, State Commercial Taxes Minister S. N. M. Ubayathullah, former Municipal chairman K. Sultan Mohideen felicitated her.

Later, the Union Minister appealed to the new chairperson and the newly elected councillors to work for the development of Thanjavur.

Pattukottai: Priya Ilango (DMK) was elected. She got 19 votes. Kumbakonam: Su. Pa. Thamizhazhagan (DMK) was elected unopposed. Six members of AIADMK boycotted the election.

Tiruvarur

Chairpersons and deputy chairpersons of four Municipalities, Tiruvarur district panchayat, nine panchayat unions and seven town panchayats were elected in an indirect election.

Municipalities

Tiruvarur— K.Thennan (DMK); Koothanallur — K. H. Yasmeen Parveen (DMK); Mannargudi— U. Karthika (DMK) chairperson; Thiruthuraipoondi— S. Rajendran (DMK).

District panchayat council:

Kamala Vadhanam (CPI) was elected as chairperson.

Panchayat unions:

Muthupettai — Election was postponed due to some problems between DMK and CPI councillors.

Tiruvarur — S. Rani (DMK); Nannilam — M. Mani (DMK); Needamangalam — P. M. Kamaludeen (Congress); Kottur — C. R. Pandiyan (CPI); Thiruthuraipoondi— R. Thamizhselvi (CPI); Kodavasal— S. Jothiraman (DMK); Koradachery — Arivalagan (DMK); Valangaiman — S. Jegathambal (DMK); Mannarudi — P. Bhaskaradevi (CPI).

Town Panchayats:

Nannilam— P. Saraswathi (DMK); Peralam— M. Chitra (CPI-M); Kodavasal — J. Padma (Congress); Koradachery — V. K. Senthil Kumar (AIADMK); Valangaiman — K. Kumaran (DMK); Needamangalam — R. Radha (DMK); Muthupettai — M. S. Karthik (DMK).
