CHENNAI: Kidex 2006, an event for children organised by the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), southern region, is being organised from December 22 to 24 at the Chennai Trade Centre. The event combines an exhibition, conferences, contests, educational sessions and seminars, and live product demonstrations. Chairman of Kidex 2006 P.K. Mohapatra, (Deputy Chairman, CII, South), said the aim was to help children make informed choices, product retailing, and to give the industry an opportunity to understand children better. Mr. Mohapatra said the CII was undertaking this child-oriented event as "it is an industry body with a responsibility towards tomorrow's citizens."
Industry representatives will get to interact with children during a conference to find out what they really want at Kidex 2006. It will also be used by industries to discuss whether there should be a code of ethics while marketing to kids, said Mr. Mohapatra. "There is no code of conduct or ethics while marketing to children. This is an attempt to jog the minds of civil society. It is nowhere close to implementation but the degree of awareness will be raised. Companies may voluntarily adhere to the code of conduct," he said. About 100 companies will be participating in Kidex 2006, representing sections such as nutrition and food, apparel and accessories, toys, games, gizmos, electronics, IT and telecom, financial and insurance services, sports, travel and tours. One of the highlights will be the `Digital Art Festival 2006', a CII-NIIT joint initiative aimed at promoting creative art using technology. As many as 4,000 students from across the country will be participating in the gala event.
