Staff Correspondent
Bidar: The Government is considering amending the Panchayati Raj Act to allow people to directly elect panchayat presidents and vice-presidents. "We believe this will make the system more effective," Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj C.M. Udasi said at Madakatti in Bhalki taluk on Saturday. Now elected members of panchayats elect presidents and vice-presidents, who retain their position only as long as they have the support of a majority of members. This brings in a certain amount of uncertainty into the system. The Government wants to remove this uncertainty, he told presspersons. The Government is also considering increasing the tenure of presidents and vice-presidents to 30 months from 20 months. Earlier, Mr. Udasi inaugurated a drinking water scheme under the Jal Nirmal Yojana at Madakatti village.
