Choose fallow land for textile park: CPI(M)

Special Correspondent

State asked to withdraw its notifications on acquiring fertile lands in Guntur district

HYDERABAD: Communist Party of India (Marxist) has demanded that the Government withdraw its notifications to acquire fertile lands in Guntur district in the name of setting up textile parks.

In a letter to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, CPI (M) State secretariat member Y. Venkateswara Rao criticised the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation's moves to issue notices for land acquisition without conducting formal public hearings. When fallow lands were available in the district, it was not appropriate to acquire fertile lands in the possession of Dalits and weaker sections.

Moreover, the acquisition process had been initiated at a time when the Government was planning to distribute lands to landless.

Alternatives

Recalling UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi's announcement that fertile lands would not be acquired for industrial development, he wanted the Government to withdraw the notifications and look for alternatives.
