NIZAMABAD: Former MLA V. Jagapathi Rao said that referendum was the best way to settle Telangana's statehood issue. "Referendum is not a political process and it is only an opinion poll. It has been in vogue almost in the entire world. On the issues of Goa, Nagaland and Sikkim this means was adopted," he said while addressing a press conference here on Saturday. Referendum could be conducted whenever there was a critical problem and a solution was eluding, he saidand added that if a political party gunning for separate State loses or wins the election the Telangana issue would not be relegated to the back of public mind. Except Telugu Desam Party all political parties contesting in Karimnagar by-election were supporting statehood. So, it did not mean that if TRS won the election separate Telangana would be formed and if it was defeated the issue would be buried, he said. Mr. Rao who hails from Karimnagar district arrived here as part of his campaign in the election to the Legislative Council from graduates' constituency. He pointed out that due to some confusion in the enrolment procedure voters' registration has been very poor. Not even five per cent graduates in the constituency comprising Nizamabad, Adilabad, Karimnagar and Medak districts had enrolled their names so far, he pointed out.
