A word of praise and war of words

Congress objects to TDP remarks on Prime Minister's speech

Konathala Ramakrishna

HYDERABAD: The Congress Legislature Party has taken strong exception to the Telugu Desam Party's broadside against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for his praise of Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy's efforts to strengthen the irrigation sector.

Addressing a press meet here on Saturday, Commercial Taxes Minister K. Ramakrishna said the TDP had done nothing for the people in its nine-year tenure and had no right to criticise a Government that had initiated several pro-farmer measures.

The TDP's charge that the Prime Minister heaped praise Dr. Reddy on extraneous considerations reflected its moral bankruptcy, Mr. Ramakrishna said.

Meanwhile, the State Government's special representative in New Delhi Mallu Ravi termed the TDP's charges against the Prime Minister as inappropriate as Dr. Singh never said anything about the Telugu Desam or the TRS during his visit.

At a separate press conference, he said the criticism by the TDP and TRS leaders only exposed "their political narrow mindedness" and it was, in turn, an insult to the polity.
