MADURAI : A mob terrorised officials and candidates inside the Madurai East panchayat union council hall, minutes after All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate P. Pandeeswari was declared the winner in the election to the post of panchayat union chairman on Saturday.

Though Returning Officer J. Rajaram (Assistant Director - Mines), told reporters that trouble began only after the result was declared, an official statement issued in the evening said a proposal for re-election had been sent to the State Election Commission.

In the 24-member panchayat union, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has 10 seats, AIADMK seven, Congress one, Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam three and Independents three.

The AIADMK councillors and the candidate told reporters that the returning officer had announced over the public address system inside the election venue that the AIADMK candidate had polled 14 votes and the DMK nominee, D. Rajeswari, nine votes. One vote was declared invalid. He also declared Ms. Pandeeswari the winner, they said.

Earlier, the mob tore the minutes book of election proceedings and broke chairs. Pieces of a torn official file were found strewn on the floor. Though the candidates were not attacked, Ms. Pandeeswari said glass pieces fell on her after a tubelight above her was smashed.
