ERODE: Cross-voting is rare in municipal chairman polls. However, in Gobichettipalayam Municipality on Saturday the AIADMK secured both the seats of chairman and vice-chairman by securing votes from the Democratic Progressive Alliance. The DPA candidate Chitra Viswanathan of the Congress and Revathy Bharathy of AIADMK had filed their nominations for the chairman post. All the 30 councillors attended the meeting. The Municipal Commissioner conducted the election. He granted ballot papers to each councillor and after distributing 20 ballots, he noticed instead of the balance 10 ballots, only nine was with him. So he stopped the election and told the councillors about the shortage of ballot paper. All the 30 councillors, including the two candidates, sought a repoll. Fresh ballot papers were prepared and a new ballot box was also arranged for the members to cast their votes. Ms. Revathy was declared elected with 16 votes defeating Ms. Chitra, who secured 14 votes. The result came as a shock to the DPA as they had 15 members (DMK- 7, Congress - 6, PMK - 1 and CPI - 1). In the AIADMK alliance, AIADMK has 11 councillors and MDMK one. Two DMDK candidates and one Independent were also elected. It is stated that the AIADMK, MDMK, DMDK, Independent and one councillor from DPA cast vote in favour of Ms. Revathy.
