Party wrests Sathyamangalam municipality from AIADMK All eight elected AIADMK councillors stayed away from the Council meeting

ERODE : The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam retained the chairmanship of the Erode municipality on Saturday with its candidate K. Kumar Murugesh elected unopposed.

"Relief measures lethargic"

All eight elected AIADMK councillors stayed away from the Council meeting during which the election was conducted. All 15 DMK members, six belonging to the Congress, two of the MDMK, one of the DMDK and 13 Independents attended the meeting.

Elections to the chairman's post were held in five municipalities, eight grade three municipalities, 20 panchayat unions, 53 town panchayats and the 26-member district panchayat councils in the district. In Sathyamangalam municipality, S.R. Velusamy of the DMK, who secured 17 votes, was elected chairman. The AIADMK candidate secured 10 votes. The DMK wrested the council from the AIADMK.

PMK wins

In Dharapuram Municipality, where the DPA alliance had given the Chairman post to the PMK, the party's Subramaniam was elected unopposed as chairman. The PMK wrested the post from the BJP.

In Bhavani Municipality, the AIADMK candidate was declared elected with a comfortable margin. While M.R. Durai secured 14 votes, the DMK's B.C. Nagarajan got 11. It is believed that the four Independents backed the AIADMK. Two votes, believed to be that of the DMDK members, were declared invalid.

In Erode Panchayat Union, DMK candidate Gokilavani Manirasu was elected unopposed as chairman. In Ariyappampalayam Town Panchayat, DMK candidate K.C.P. Elangovan defeated DMK rebel A. Chinnasamy.

Candidate `missing'

In Dharapuram Panchayat Union, the DPA had granted the seat to the Uzhavar Uzaipalar Katchi. But, a DMK councillor Ramesh filed nominations and secured the seat unopposed. The Uzhavar Uzhaipalar Katchi candidate was not present at the meeting.
