E-mail threat: Kerala police in Coimbatore

COIMBATORE: Two Kerala police officials on Saturday visited the Coimbatore Central Prison to inquire into an e-mail threat to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Dr. Singh is proposed to visit Kerala on November 1. The e-mail was received by the Government recently. The two officials sought the list of visitors who had come to meet the Kerala-based People's Democratic Party (PDP) leader Abdul Nasser Maudhany over the last two-years. The PDP leader has been in judicial custody in connection with the Coimbatore serial blasts for the last eight years. The prison and police sources however termed the inquiry as a routine one. — Staff Reporter

Advance bail to former Minister

MADURAI: The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has granted anticipatory bail to former AIADMK Minister Anita R. Radhakrishnan and his aide T. Chitranathan in an attempt to murder case. Justice M. Jeyapaul directed them to appear daily before the Meignanapuram police station in Tuticorin district, which had registered the case against the duo for allegedly attacking a rival party cadre on October 13. — Staff Reporter

Mother Teresa Excellence Awards

CHENNAI: New Delhi-based `Front for National Progress' presented the Mother Teresa Excellence Awards to persons from different walks of life for professional excellence combined with commitment to social progress at a seminar here on Thursday.

The recipients included Documentary Film Maker Dr. S. Krishnaswamy, Chief of Kensington Hospital Dr. A. Venugopal, Industrialist T.G. Varghese, Prof. N. Krishnaswamy of Indo-Japan Chamber of Commerce and Social Worker Dr. Indira Nahar.

Presenting the awards, former Governor of Orissa M.M. Rajendran, stressed the need for energy security with emphasis on alternative clean sources of energy, food security and effective measures to defeat terrorism, as vital for national progress.

Dr. S. Krishnaswamy, accepting the award, said "Development will be real only if the entire population is taken forward, pulling up people from below the poverty line." General secretary of the Front for National Progress Thomas Mathew proposed a vote of thanks. — Special Correspondent

Suspected blast case accused held

COIMBATORE: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Crime Branch CID have picked up a 29-year-old person from Cherambadi near Gudalur in the Nilgiris district late on Friday night suspecting him to be Tailor Raja, one of the most wanted accused in the Coimbatore serial blasts case.

Tailor Raja alias Sadiq alias Valarntha Raja, son of Abdul Majeeth of Kuniamuthur in Coimbatore, was wanted by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) for the last eight years for the serial blasts on February 14, 1998. Already 166 accused are facing trial. Tailor Raja had been accused of involvement in the sourcing of explosives.

The SIT officials confirmed that a suspect had been picked up and was being brought to Coimbatore for questioning. — Staff Reporter

Assembly panel to visit Erode

ERODE: The Public Accounts Committee of the Tamil Nadu Assembly will visit Erode district on Monday, said the District Collector, D. Karthikeyan, on Saturday. The panel led by its chairman C. Gnanasekaran will visit some tanneries and Erode Milk Producers Cooperative Union Dairy. The panel will conduct a review meeting.

Demonstration

Tuticorin : Employees of the Life Insurance Corporation staged a demonstration here on Saturday to press their multi-point demands.

They urged the authorities concerned to fill 17,000 odd vacancies in the organisation.

D. Devaprakash, president, All India Insurance Employees Association, Tirunelveli division, addressed the employees. About 100 persons took part in the agitation.

Four killed

VIRUDHUNAGAR : Four passengers, including the conductor of a State-owned bus, were killed when the vehicle rammed a stationary lorry on the by-pass road in Aruppukottai on Friday night.

The victims were identified as T. Veerammal (35) of Perungudi, A. Irulayi (20) of Melur, R. Ponnusamy (54) of Anna Nagar and the conductor, Tilagar.

Eight others, including five women, injured in the accident, were admitted to the Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai. The bus was going to Madurai from Aruppukottai.

Detained

SIVAGANGA : The police on Friday arrested Jayaraman (45) of Thirupachethi under the Goondas Act.

Water level

MADURAI : The water level in the Periyar dam stood at 126.8 feet (full level 136 feet) with an inflow of 3931 cusecs and a discharge of 1500 cusecs. The level in the Vaigai dam was at 62.04 feet (full level 71 feet) with an inflow of 1673 cusecs and a discharge of 1541 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit stood at 7906 mcft. Rainfall was recorded in the following places (in mm): Periyar 65, Tekkadi 57, Gudalur 36, Veerapadi 12, Sothuparai 30, Kallandiri 23.3 and Idayapatti 10.2. — Staff Reporter

Body found

Tiruchi: A body of a man, aged around 30 years, cut into two pieces was found near the railway track near Elamanur station in the Tiruchi-Karur section on Friday. The identity of the victim is yet to be established. Railway police sources said the body was sent to the Government Hospital for postmortem.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The water level in the Mettur Dam stood at 95.34 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Saturday. The inflow was 6,868 cusecs and the discharge, 100 cusecs. — Staff Reporter
