THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Parking space will be made compulsory for buildings. The Government will not accord permission for construction of big buildings that do not have sufficient room for parking vehicles, Minister for Local Administration Paloli Mohammed Kutty has said. Mr. Kutty said in an official release here on Saturday that the Government has decided to strictly enforce the rule in view of the problems faced due to lack of parking space in the cities. Members who participated in the discussion on the demand for grants of the Local Administration Department in the Assembly said the Government should strictly enforce the building rules. Considering the opinion of the MLAs, the Government has decided to take stern action against those violating building rules and using parking space for commercial purposes, the release said. Parking space will be made mandatory for marriage and convention halls near the main roads. Those halls that have no space should make arrangements for parking vehicles. Those who fail to comply with the direction will not be allowed to function, he said.
Floor area ratio
The floor area ratio in the State is very high compared to the neighbouring States. The Chief Town Planner has been directed to examine the floor area ratio in Kerala and other States. The Government will not permit any construction that would cause public inconvenience in urban areas, the Minister said.
