Achuthanandan holds talks with Rao

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister V. S. Achuthanandan held talks here on Saturday with C. N. R. Rao, advisor to the Prime Minister on science and technology. The State's demands, including setting up of an institute of science education and an aquatic research centre, a centre for molecular material science and a science and technology museum, were discussed at the meeting, Mr. Achuthanandan told reporters later. — PTI

Manmohan Singh to address KPCC meet

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will address a special convention of the KPCC at 11 a.m. on November 1, according to his revised programme. KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala asked the KPCC members, DCC presidents, MLAs, State office-bearers of the feeder organisations, office-bearers of the Thiruvananthapuram DCC and block presidents to report at the Rajiv Gandhi auditorium in Indira Bhavan before 10 a.m. on Wednesday. — Special Correspondent

Notice to be served on Harrison Malayalam

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Forest Minister Benoy Viswom has directed the officials to serve notice on the Harrison Malayalam Plantation on the basis of reports that it has sold the forestland given to it on lease. The Minister is visiting the Plantation on November 5 to take stock of the situation. — Special Correspondent

Food grains seized

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

A team led by the Vigilance Officer of Civil Supplies has seized 189 sacks of ration rice and eight sacks of wheat carrying the Food Corporation of India's seal while it was being loaded into a lorry from a private godown in Thrissur. According to official information reaching here on Saturday, the owner of the lorry, C.P.Joy, was later produced before court on the charge of black-marketing rice and wheat. — Special Correspondent

Ganja seized

KOLLAM: In a raid conducted by the special squad of the Excise, 18.85 kg of ganja was seized from a house at Punalur town on Friday night. Excise Inspector N. Ashok Kumar, who led the team, said Shafeeq, 40, was arrested in connection with the seizure. He was produced before a court here on Saturday and remanded. — Staff Reporter

Two arrested

PATHANAMTHITTA: The Aranmula police have arrested two persons from Thekkemala near Kozhencherry on Friday night. According to Sub-Inspector S. Nandakumar, the accused were Viswambharan, 37, of Kumaramperoor Edathara in Chittar and Manoharan, 36, of Poozhikkad Thavalamkulam near Pandalam. Both were allegedly involved in not less than 18 cases of burglary registered at eight police stations in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha and Kollam districts. — Staff Reporter

No change in exam schedule

Kochi: The Sree Sanakaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady, has said that there will be no change in the examination schedule of the university owing to the proposed strike by private buses. The Professor in charge of examinations at the university said this in a press note here on Saturday. — Staff Reporter

Social service schemes launched

PALAKKAD: The social service schemes of N.J. Nair-Vijayalakshmi Charitable Trust for the year 2006-07 were launched by K.K. Divakaran, M.L.A, at a function here on Saturday. The MLA also distributed wheel chairs, sewing machines and furniture for schools. Financial assistance was also given to old age homes and mentally challenged children. The function was presided over by Dr. C.R. Ramaswamy, managing trustee of Thanal Charitable Trust. District Superintendent of Police G. Sparjankumar was the chief guest. — Staff Reporter

Loco pilots' meeting

Kochi: A national-level meeting of the All-India Loco Running Staff Association ended here on Saturday with a resolution that loco pilots were not ready to run trains beyond eight hours at a stretch. — Staff Reporter

Mass fast held

Kochi: The Bus Terminal Action Committee organised a mass fast on Saturday in protest against the alleged refusal of the Agriculture Department to provide its land at Vyttila Junction for setting up a bus terminal. The fast was inaugurated by K. Babu, MLA, said a release. Deputy Mayor C.K. Manishankar spoke. — Staff Reporter
