Helping children achieve their aim

ILP provides assistance to poor and meritorious children

Bangalore: Studying in the eighth standard, Shambhulinga dreams of becoming an IAS officer. "I want to fulfil my ambition and I wish that all needy children who have got an opportunity to go school, should continue to study and achieve their goals," he says.

Shambhulinga, once a child labourer, is now going to school. He is among the 108 underprivileged children who are being supported by the India Literacy Project (ILP) through a scholarship programme, "Puraskara," which is being implemented in Bangalore Urban, Bangalore Rural, Raichur and Davangere districts in Karnataka and Chittoor district in Andhra Pradesh.

On Saturday, ILP organised a programme to recognise 50 children from economically poor backgrounds from Bangalore Urban and Bangalore Rural districts for their scholastic achievements and to motivate them to study further.

According to ILP representatives, "Puraskara" was envisaged with the understanding that today's job market needed a minimum of high school education and many marginalised children dropped out of school in the seventh and eighth standard.

ILP provides assistance to meritorious children who are poor so that they can help retain the most vulnerable groups such as rehabilitated working children, orphans, children of single parents, in school. The certificates were presented to the children by the special guests — Umashankar Periodi, project leader, Learning Guarantee Programme, Azim Premji Foundation, Sampathur Vishwanath, author of children's books and R. Babu, director, Delivery Enablement, Hewlett Packard.
