NEW DELHI: Nationalist Congress Party Delhi unit president and Badarpur MLA Ramvir Singh Bidhuri on Saturday accused the Congress and the governments headed by it in Delhi and at the Centre of taking the people of Delhi for a ride and trying to score political points from the suffering of lakhs of families who face displacement and loss of livelihood.
Sealing scheduled
In a statement, Mr. Bidhuri said it was surprising that despite being in power in Delhi, in the MCD and at the Centre, Congress delegations were meeting members of the Supreme Court Monitoring Committee for relief to traders from sealing scheduled to begin from November 1. He said there should be no ifs and buts; if the Government was committed to providing relief to the Capital's traders and their families, it should amend the Constitution and put the Delhi Laws (Special Provisions) Act, 2006, in Schedule IX of the Constitution so that sealing does not take place and the matter is out of the purview of the courts. Stating that he would raise this important matter along with other issues in the Delhi Assembly session beginning on Monday, Mr. Bidhuri informed that the Business Advisory Committee headed by the Speaker, Chaudhary Prem Singh, had accepted his notice for discussion on corruption prevailing in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and seeking its split into smaller bodies to make it more responsive and manageable. The short duration discussion in the House on this particular issue has been listed for Tuesday. Similarly, Mr. Bidhuri said, the Speaker had also accepted his notice for a short duration discussion on the issue of waiver of property tax in the Capital's rural villages and the failure of the Government to extend the `Lal Dora' despite repeated promises.
Rural character
Attempts to change the rural character of the villages to urban would also be raised in the House. Supporting the cause of the traders who have been agitating for relief, Mr. Bidhuri said what was even more shocking was the support extended by the Congress to their three-day "Delhi bandh" beginning Monday.
Traders
"The Delhi Congress has decided to agitate against its own governments in Delhi and at the Centre and also support the traders who have accused Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and the Congress leadership of doing little to save their livelihood,'' he added.
