IGNOU introduces progress report book

NEW DELHI: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has introduced a "progress report book'' which will be maintained by every student for the entire duration of their course.

Making this announcement while addressing new students for the July session via teleconferencing, the newly appointed Vice-Chancellor V.N Rajasekharan Pillai said that this "comprehensive" record of evaluation would be authenticated by the regional offices or study centre coordinators. "This will create an atmosphere of accountability at all levels of learning,'' he added.

Convention on satyagraha

NEW DELHI: Union Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh has said there is a need to re-invent Mahatma Gandhi and his thoughts and apply them to practical life. He was speaking at the inaugural ceremony of a daylong convention on "Satyagraha: A Media Perspective" organised by the National Institute of Social Communication Research and Training and the Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti here on Saturday.

"We need to remind ourselves about his relevance today in solving the problems of the society," he added.

Women's hostel opened in Rohini

NEW DELHI: Delhi Mayor Farhad Suri on Saturday said it was the social responsibility of society to provide a safe and secure environment for working women.

Mr. Suri was speaking at the inauguration of a newly constructed Women's Hostel in Sector 9 of Rohini that was dedicated by the MCD to working women. Breaking protocol, the Mayor invited a senior citizen, B. R. Chopra, to inaugurate the building.

The three-storey building has been constructed at a cost of Rs.1.3 crores within a record period of 18 months. It has 58 rooms, a kitchen and a dinning hall.

Three arrested on betting charges

NEW DELHI: Three persons were arrested in a north-west Delhi locality for allegedly running a betting racket during the Champions Trophy match between South Africa and Pakistan.

Acting on a tip-off, police raided a house on Friday in Sector 16 of Rohini where betting was allegedly in progress. The gang had already received bets for more than Rs.20 lakhs at the time of the arrest, police said.

The arrested persons have been identified as Subhash Chander, Raj Kumar and Kamal Kumar.
