Udhagamandalam: Even as the number of tourists complaining about poor civic amenities in this hill station has increased of late, complaints about the visitors abusing scenic spots have started mounting. A regret of many here is that on account of irresponsible attitude of many of the tourists, popular scenic spots are now heavily littered. Among the worst affected are the Film Shooting Hill, Pykara Falls, Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park and Dodabetta peak. Boards put up at some places requesting the tourists not to throw disposable plastic items or other waste materials are ignored by the visitors. Regrettably, among those who think nothing of discarding plates, cups, bottles chocolate wrappers etc are students who come in groups. The Nilgiris Collector Santosh K Misra had recently launched a cleaning campaign at Dodabetta peak. Though many had extended a helping hand, the problem is threatening to get out of hand. Since all the scenic spots extend over hundreds of acres, it would not be possible to keep them litter-free without the cooperation of the tourists. Expressing concern over the lack of environmental consciousness among the tourists, Nilgiri Wildlife and Environment Association vice-president Geetha Srinivasan said litter, especially plastic items, not only mars the appearance of the places but also places at grave risk wild animals. Meanwhile, some environmental campaigners told The Hindu that if tourists were insensitive to the ecology, appropriate action should be taken to make them fall in line. Boards containing warning signs should be suitably re-designed and watch and ward staff posted. Local pavement hawkers should be used to educate the tourists.
