Coimbatore: Avinashilingam University celebrated World Food Day recently. Chancellor K. Kulandaivel underlined the importance of the Green and White Revolutions that gave India a real impetus. Chandrasekaran, Professor, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, who spoke on food security and increasing farmers' income, said that science and technology should be used to improve the quality of seeds in order to step up agricultural production and thereby the economy. The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations celebrated World Food Day every year on October 16. The day aimed at creating awarenesss of the plight of the world's hungry and malnourished, and encouraged people to take action about it. This year's theme was "Investing in Agriculture for Food Security". Investment in infrastructure in rural areas, especially in water, roads, power and communications, had a crucial role in kindling agricultural growth. If countries around the globe got these conditions right, dramatic benefits to agriculture and poor rural household could be expected. Agriculture had become a minor player in many an industrialised economy around the world. It has to play a definitive role in order to bring down the curtain on hunger and malnutrition in various parts around the globe.
