NEW DELHI : With no tangible solution in sight yet to avert the sealing exercise scheduled to begin in the Capital from November 1, tension seemed to be mounting among the trading community here on Saturday. Upset over the failure of the Delhi and Union governments to get relief for them, there were demands from the beleaguered traders for resignation of the elected representatives at a series of traders' meetings in the city. The police threw a security cordon around the Delhi Vidhan Sabha and began preparations to block entry of traffic on the roads leading to the Assembly in view of the call for "Delhi bandh" from Monday and protests by traders and the Bharatiya Janata Party, who have pledged to "gherao" the Assembly on Monday.
Meetings held
Traders held meetings at Kamla Nagar, Lajpat Nagar, Chandni Chowk and Town Hall to protest against the proposed sealing operations. Warning the authorities of serious consequences, they blamed the Delhi Government and Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit for the present state of affairs and said they would teach the Congress a lesson during the municipal elections scheduled to be held early next year. The traders, who were joined by their families at the street-corner meetings, raised slogans against the Chief Minister and the Congress president accusing them of doing little to end the current crisis in the Capital. Traders in Kamla Nagar, Lajpat Nagar and other areas wanted MLAs and councillors from all parties to resign and join their agitation if they had the interest of the trading community at heart. The traders said they should not be blamed for any violence during the bandh as there was a strong resentment among the trading community who face loss of livelihood due to sealing.
