TIRUCHI: Congress candidate Sarubala R.Tondaiman and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's M. Anbazhagan were re-elected Mayor and Deputy Mayor respectively of Tiruchi on Saturday. Though the Opposition AIADMK chose to enter the fray by fielding N. Mariam Pitchai in the indirect elections, Mrs. Tondaiman had a smooth sailing with the support of the alliance partners in the DPA, which commands a majority with 40 councillors in the 60-member Corporation Council. Interestingly, Mrs.Tondaiman secured 45 votes, with the apparent support of some Independents. Mr.Mariam Pitchai polled 14 votes, including 10 from his own party and four of its alliance partner MDMK. One vote was declared invalid. Later in the day, Mr.Anbazhagan was elected unopposed Deputy Mayor with all the 14 members of AIADMK-MDMK combine staying away. Both Mrs. Tondaiman and Mr. Anbazhagan were administered the oath of office, immediately after their election, by Corporation Commissioner B. Balachandran.
