`Judges are not monarchs'

Arijit Pasayat inaugurates seminar

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Judges are not monarchs. They work within the framework of the Constitution and have limitations, said Justice Arijit Pasayat, judge, Supreme Court, in the city on Saturday.

He was delivering the inaugural address at a symposium on `Judiciary and Good Governance' organised by the Menon Institute of Legal Advocacy and Training (MILAT).

"People criticise judges and their verdicts without reading the judgement," Justice Pasayat said. He noted that the expectation of the public from the judiciary is "considerably high." "People expect 100 per cent from the judiciary all the time," he said. Even a marginal decline in its performance is met with adverse criticism.

Justice Pasayat criticised the tendency among the public to single out judges and label him or her as a `very honest judicial officer.' Allegations of corruption do not involve even one per cent of the judiciary, but it makes news, since it is a story like `a man biting the dog,' Justice Pasayat said.

N.R. Madhavan Menon of MILAT said the executive, legislature and judiciary have to realise their responsibilities and act within their powers respecting the sovereignty of the people.
