KOCHI: K.A. Makkarkunju, president, Ernakulam District Private Bus Operators' Association, has said that private bus operators in the district will join the State-wide private bus strike from Monday in protest against the State Government's directive on speed governors. At a press conference here on Saturday, Mr. Makkarkunju demanded that the recent order on speed governors from the Transport Commissioner be withdrawn immediately and vehicles, whether old or new, not fitted with speed governors should be given fitness certificates. He said the Government had said in the discussions held with bus operators that speed governors need to be made mandatory in Kerala only when States also did it. But the bureaucracy was insisting on fitting the equipment in a phased manner. Even the Supreme Court order had given time till November 20, but the officials were not ready to wait. According to the order, new private buses should have speed governors from October 9 and those already plying from October 23.
