NEW DELHI: With the arrest of two persons in Kolkata on Saturday, the North Delhi police claim to have solved the mystery behind the murder of a Chandni Chowk businessman here.

On June 25, Sunder Lal Jain, a 55-year-old trader operating from Chandni Chowk, was murdered in his sari shop on Nai Sadak in a gruesome manner with over 70 stab wounds on the body. An FIR was registered at the Chandni Chowk police station on the same day.

Several police teams were constituted under the supervision of Harendra Kumar Singh, Assistant Commissioner of Police in Kotwali, and Atul Katiyar, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police in North District, to apprehend the criminals. The Delhi police also announced a reward of Rs. 25,000 for any clues to the case.

During the investigations, it was revealed that one Yogesh Sharma, aged 20 and residing in Narela, had worked for a few days at Mr. Jain's shop and was in regular touch with the deceased. It also came to light that on the day of the murder and the day before, Mr. Jain had called up Yogesh Sharma a number of times.

Subsequently, raids at the residence of Yogesh Sharma in Narela were conducted but he was missing. It was also revealed that his friend Bhagwan, also resident of Narela, was also missing.

From the complainant (son of deceased) it was revealed that the accused had also taken cash.

Investigating teams were sent to various places including Chandigarh, Shimla, Manali and Jammu. The hide-and-seek with the police finally ended on Saturday morning when the suspects were arrested in Kolkata by a team led by Sub-Inspector Ram Niwas and brought to Delhi.

The interrogation of the accused revealed that Yogesh Sharma had worked for a few days at Mr. Jain's shop. During that period the shop owner had allegedly made some sexual overtures towards him. Even though Yogesh left the job, the deceased used to call him.

Yogesh alleged that the deceased was in the habit of calling boys for oil massage. After he fell into the trap, Yogesh purportedly told the police, he planned to kill his former employer. His friend Bhagwan allegedly agreed to be his accomplice.

On June 25, Yogesh and Bhagwan entered Mr. Jain's shop in the afternoon and when Mr. Jain allegedly took them to first floor of the shop they started stabbing him and left him in a pool of blood. While getting out of the shop they searched the table drawers and took away Rs.3.5 lakhs.

The police have recovered some cash, hotel bills, air tickets and laptop from the accused.
