dated October 30, 1956: Fighting stops in Budapest

Hungary's Titoist Prime Minister, Mr. Imre Nagy, has ordered Government troops "to stop firing at the rebels at once to prevent any further bloodshed," Budapest Radio announced on October 28. He also declared that the Soviet troops would be withdrawn immediately from Budapest. Mr. Imre Nagy's dramatic order came seven hours after the radio had announced armistice talks in the six-day-old revolt which has rent the historic twin cities capital straddling the Danube and cost hundreds of lives. Reports said the fighting had since stopped. Earlier, the rebel radio station at Gyoer, where an opposition "Government" was reported to have been set up, had announced that the rebels had sent an "ultimatum" to Mr. Imre Nagy demanding an immediate end to the intervention of Soviet troops. The Premier, who went on the air less than three hours before the "ultimatum" was due to expire, announced that withdrawal of Soviet troops had been agreed upon between him and the Commander-in-Chief of the Soviet forces in Hungary.
