19 cm rain in Chennai

CHENNAI: Saturday's well marked low pressure area over southwest and adjoining west central Bay off north Tamil Nadu-south Andra coast has intensified into a depression and lies over west central Bay off south Andhra coast and centred at 29/0300 UTC near latitude 14.5 degree north and longitude 80.5 degree east at about 50 km east of Nellore. The system is likely to intensify further and move in a northerly direction and cross Andhra coast between Bapatla and Kakinada by Sunday. Northeast monsoon has been vigorous over Tamil Nadu, Kerala and south coastal Andhra Pradesh. Rainfall occurred at most places over Tamil Nadu, Kerala and coastal Andhra Pradesh. The following stations recorded very heavy to heavy rainfall in cm: Chennai and Ongole 19 each, Tiruvallur 18, Cheyyur (Kanchipuram dt.) 16.

Forecast (valid until Tuesday morning): Rain or thundershowers are likely at most places over coastal Andhra Pradesh, at many places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Rayalaseema and Telangana and at a few places over Karnataka.
