Basu in favour of inviting Hu Jintao

Marcus Dam

Kolkata: Veteran Marxist leader Jyoti Basu, said here on Sunday that he was in favour of Chinese President Hu Jintao, being invited to address a joint session of Parliament when he visits the country in the third week of November.

Drawing a distinction between his wanting the Chinese President to address the joint session of Parliament and the opposition of the Left parties to a proposal to invite United States President, George Bush, to do the same when the latter had visited the country in March, Mr. Basu said, "We see China in one way, the other [the U.S.] in another."

"Everyone knows our [the Communist Party of India (Marxist)] and the Left Front's views [on the U.S.] and that we do not favour their [political] policies even though we are not against maintaining business and trade relations with them... There is nothing that is not revealed [regarding our views]", Mr. Basu said.

The former West Bengal Chief Minister made clear that despite existing business and trade relations with the U.S., the country "is not considered our friend" because of its political differences with the Left parties. "Neither do they [U.S.] consider us a friend," he added.

"Having business and trade relations is alright even with those whom we do not consider friends," Mr. Basu said. He recalled having told a senior "recently appointed political advisor" of the U.S. Government when the latter had called on him: "let business and trade relations continue but there is not much point discussing political matters".

Mr. Basu was speaking to newspersons after attending the two-day conference of the CPI(M) State Committee which commenced during the day. The party's position on recent political developments in the State will be discussed at the conference.
