MYSORE: The suspected Al-Badr militants would have got Indian passports had it not been for the presence of mind displayed by an Inspector, who insisted that they speak "at least a word in Kannada." Mohammad Fahad and Mohammad Ali Hussain had applied for passports at Bangalore, and their applications were forwarded to the Mysore police for verification. The applications were filed through an agent, Sadique, who is now under arrest. Sadique used all his influence with the lower hierarchy in the police department to clear the police verification. But the local inspector wanted to know why Hussain could not speak a single word of Kannada though the "genuine documents" submitted by him, including the birth certificate issued by the Mysore Corporation, "proved" that he was born in the city and had been living here for more than 20 years. Suspecting that something was amiss, the Inspector refused to clear the police verification.
