Conference on environment inaugurated

NEW DELHI: The Henkel IMT international conference on "Green Competitiveness for Sustainable Development (ICGC) 2006" was inaugurated by director general of The Economic Research Institute (TERI) R.K. Pachauri at India Habitat Centre here on Friday.

Delivering the inaugural address, Mr. Pachauri said: "Protecting environment is not just a luxury, it has major economical benefits. We in developing economy have to ensure that we manage our natural resources effectively."

The conference brought together eminent global speakers from the academia, industry, government and professional bodies such as Central Pollution Control Board, Bureau of Energy Efficiency and Council of Scientific and Industrial Research.

Preventing heart attacks

NEW DELHI: Vitamins and antioxidants do not clean the arteries of the heart but regular exercise, eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains can reduce the chance of heart attack, president of Heart Care Foundation of India K.K. Aggarwal said.

Quoting from an international study, Dr. Aggarwal said vitamin supplementation does not prevent heart attack, paralysis or cardiovascular disease. He said earlier research had indicated that vitamin D, C and E, besides antioxidants could offer some protection but recent clinical trials have failed to confirm the expectation.

Eligibility conditions modified

NEW DELHI: The eligibility conditions of the Advanced Certificate in Power Distribution Manangement of Indira Gandhi National Open University have been modified and the last date of submission of admission forms extended to November 20.

A release issued by IGNOU said this Advanced Certificate in Power Distribution Management has been developed in collaboration with and support of the Ministry of Power, USAID-India, Power Finance Corporation under the Distribution Reform Udgrades and Management (DRUM) Project.

Eligibility for the programme is Engineering graduates, Engineering diploma holders or Commerce, Science or Arts graduates or equivalent with two years experience in power utilities or the electricity sector.

Held for burglaries

NEW DELHI: Three youngsters, allegedly involved in burglaries, were arrested at Usmanpur in the North-East Delhi on Saturday.

Four pairs of anklets and a pair of earrings were recovered from their possession.
