No laxity in reaching out to people: Chief Secretary

CHENNAI: The State Government has been taking all necessary steps to provide relief to the people in flood-hit areas, rescue marooned fishermen and prevent spread of water-borne diseases, Chief Secretary L.K. Tripathy has said.

Shortly after holding discussions with officials, he told reporters here on Sunday that floods had claimed 35 lives. According to preliminary police report, the death of three persons who were travelling in a car on G.N.Chetty Road here on Saturday night was caused by suffocation due to a mechanical problem. The case was being investigated.

Mr. Tripathy denied there was laxity on the part of the Government in carrying out flood relief measures.

There had been no time gap in reaching out to the people. Personnel belonging to various departments were involved in relief work.

Most of them were on the spot, monitoring the situation.

People in low-lying areas had been shifted to relief centres.

The Government had not received any report on the extent of crop damage or property loss in districts, Mr.Tripathy said.

All but two of the 66 missing boats carrying fishermen of Nagapattinam had returned, he said. Six fishermen were yet to be located.
