KOCHI: Captain Diana David and spinners Gouher Sultana and Savita Kumari came good as Andhra Pradesh regained the South Zone inter-State women's cricket title after a three-year break at the Tripunithura Palace Oval on Sunday. Andhra Pradesh drubbed Kerala by seven wickets and finished level with defending champion Tamil Nadu, which defeated Karnataka by four wickets at the Ambalamugal Kochi Refinery Oval. Both had 10 points from the four-team league event. According to the championship rules, in case of a tie, the result of the league encounter between the two teams would decide the winner and since AP had beaten TN earlier, it was adjudged the champion. Both AP and TN, the runner-up, also qualified for the National Championship to be held later this year. "This is a major achievement since we're basically a bunch of juniors," said international Diana David, the Andhra captain who put in a consistent performance. "And we're qualifying for the Nationals after three years." Madhusoodana Rao, DGM, State Bank of Travancore, gave away the prizes.
The scores: Kerala 114 off 49.1 overs (Preethi Singh 32, Gouher Sultana three for 21, Savita Kumari three for 15) lost to AP 115 for three in 33.2 overs (V. Rajini 26, Diana David 37 n.o., Rameshwari 26 n.o.). Karnataka 136 for five in 35 overs (Reshmi 26, Vilasini 34 n.o., Thirush Kamini two for 18) lost to TN 137 for six in 34.5 overs (D. Kamakshi 61).
