Thiruvananthapuram: A 75-year-old woman was killed in Kollam and two persons were reported missing in Thiruvananthapuram as incessant rain continued to wreak havoc in the two districts on Sunday. Poruvazhi village in Kollam district experienced a mild tremor, which damaged eight houses. With indications that the rain would continue, the State Government geared its machinery to meet a possible flood situation in the two districts. The woman was killed when the chimney of her house near Karunagapally collapsed in the rain. One person was reported missing at Mamom, near Chirayinkeezh, while another was reported missing at Kannanmoola in the capital. The district administrations of Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram have opened 27 and seven relief camps, respectively. In Kollam, 1,728 families have been lodged in the camps, while in Thiruvananthapuram, 259 families have been shifted there. Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran said the District Collectors had been instructed to undertake relief operations, such as opening relief camps.
Holiday declared
The Kollam District Collector has issued orders declaring Monday a holiday for educational institutions, including professional colleges. The shutters of Thenmala Dam were lifted following an increase in the water level. The Kazhuthurutti river, the catchment area of Thenmala, was in spate.
