Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Five persons were drowned in the Yamuna during the Chhat Puja celebration on Sunday. While the bodies of three were recovered by Delhi Fire Service personnel, two remained untraced.

The celebrations turned into tragedy in Jaitpur village in South Delhi when three youths from the village were drowned in the river during the puja. It is learnt that 18-year-old Rajinder got washed away in the Agra canal. Sunil,30, and Chandrashekhar,28, tried to save him but were drowned in the current which was very strong. The bodies of all three were later recovered by divers.

In the other incidents, an unidentified boy was drowned in Okhla canal while a 17-year-old girl Putul was reported to have drowned in the Badli area. However, the Delhi Fire Service said while they had received information about these two from the police, they could not be traced in the waters.
