NEW DELHI : Setting January 2007 as deadline to carry out a through review of the party's shortcomings, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has directed that a ``serious introspection'' be held right from the Central Committee to the branches. Carrying out a mid-term review of the progress since the April 2005 18th Party Congress, the CPI (M) concluded that the whole experience of this period confirms that the present political situation offers opportunities for expansion of the Party, which has made some advances in certain areas. ``The present opportunities may not last for long. The entire party has to move quickly to utilise the opportunities offered by the present situation. The shortcomings and weaknesses of certain committees and comrades to change their routine style of functioning, to be with the masses to take up their multifarious issues affecting them and to take broad and bold approaches in tackling the issues that have emerged, should be pinpointed and rectified,'' the party Central Committee noted at its last meeting. The introspection would be to re-assess and to find out ``what is lacking and where we are lagging behind''. It called upon the entire partymen to make this serious review and to concretise the task and complete it at all level before January next year. The Committee said concrete plans should be made for implementing the decisions of the 18th Congress in a time-bound manner and carry out period review; lay stress on building mass organisation and re-orient party work on the basis of party documents; make efforts to activateparty members and cadres keeping in mind electoral prospects. ``The Party should be able to win more assembly and parliament seats in the coming elections'', it observed. Among the tasks identified was the preparation of a document on ideological issues for discussion and also prepare an updated rectification document to provide a fresh thrust to the rectification campaign.
Parliamentary work
The Central Committee felt that the party's performance in the Lok Sabha, where it has 44 MPs, should be improved with better delegation of work and encouraging them to prepare and make interventions. It also observed that working of party MPs in the Standing Committees was weak. ``Time and again our MPs are not able to intervene to record our views on legislation and reports taken up in the committees," it noted.
