Murder at college: Former student sentenced to life

Postgraduate girl student killed near computer lab of NIT-Tiruchi

TIRUCHI: The First Additional District and Sessions Judge, P. Ramamoorthi, on Monday convicted and sentenced a former engineering student, A. Bharadwaj, to undergo life imprisonment for murdering a postgraduate girl student of the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchi, inside the institution premises at Thuvakudi near here a couple of years ago.

The victim, Akila, a first-year MCA student, was attacked with a knife by Bharadwaj, a final-year Mechanical engineering student of the SASTRA University, in front of the computer laboratory on August 5, 2004. Akila died on the spot.

Following the murder, the police arrested Bharadwaj and a case was registered against him by the Thuvakudi police.

Akila and Bharadwaj were friends from their school days and the later approached the girl's parents for their consent to marry her. However, the girl's parents were understood to have told that the proposal could wait until she completed her studies. Irked by this, Bharadwaj had stabbed Akila to death, the police said.

According to the prosecution, the trial commenced in April. The Judge pronounced the verdict sentencing Bharadwaj to life imprisonment and slapped a fine of Rs. 1,000.
