Chidambaram's new-look team

Panel to be headed by Ashok Jha as Finance Secretary

NEW DELHI: With the Finance Ministry about to settle down for the Budget-making exercise for the next fiscal, Finance Minister P. Chidambaram, will have a new-look team of bureaucrats to assist him.

The team will be headed by Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) Ashok Jha, a 1969 batch IAS officer (Andhra Pradesh cadre), who has been appointed the new Finance Secretary in place of Adarsh Kishore. Mr. Kishore is likely to leave for the IMF.

A 1969 batch IAS officer (Rajasthan cadre), Mr. Kishore was simultaneously looking after the Department of Expenditure in the Ministry. In his place, the Government has appointed the current Disinvestment Secretary, Sanjiv Mishra, as the new Expenditure Secretary. Mr. Mishra is a 1972 batch IAS officer of the Gujarat cadre.

Vinod Rai, a 1972 batch IAS officer (Kerala cadre) who has been looking after the banking division in the Finance Ministry as Special Secretary, has been elevated as Secretary to look after the entire financial sector.

The changes in the North Block apart, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, alsoapproved the appointment of C.T. Misra, now Secretary, Parliamentary Affairs, as Chairperson of the Staff Selection Committee.

In his place, P.K. Mishra, a 1972 batch IAS officer (U.P. cadre), has been brought in as the new Parliamentary Affairs Secretary.

Similarly, replacing P.K. Hota, who retires on October 31 as the Health Secretary, would beNaresh Dayal, a 1972 batch officer (Uttar Pradesh cadre).
