Tight security

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: An almost curfew-like situation prevailed in large parts of North East Delhi on the first day of the three-day "Delhi bandh" called by traders in protest against the sealing drive in the city. Eager to prevent a repeat of the violent bandh on September 20, when four persons had died and many more were injured, a large number of Delhi Police and para-military personnel were deployed in the area on Monday.

"Apart from Delhi Police personnel, volunteers and Civil Defence personnel, about seven companies of Central Reserve Police Force, Border Security Force and Rapid Action Force were deployed across the district. Strong pickets were also set up on the 66-foot road and the 100-foot road where most of the incidents of violence were reported on September 20. Barricades were also erected and a proper access control mechanism was put in place at all the vulnerable points," Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-East District) Devesh Srivastava said. "We held meetings with traders and political leaders and urged them to organise peaceful demonstrations," he added. In North Delhi, the police resorted to water cannons to disperse the demonstrators outside Old Secretariat. According to the police, 1,500 people including six MLAs and a Member of Parliament were detained and later released.
